The food culture of Malaysia can bind people together over a wide variety of food.

However, it is the same food culture that has led to 13.3% of Malaysians becoming obese

the highest among Southeast Asian countries.

Half of the Malaysian adult population is either overweight or obese

with the health ministry warning that the matter is raising a red flag.

Of Malaysian adults, 50.1% were overweight, 30.4% were overweight and 19.7% were

obese, as tabulated by the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2019.

“The obesity rate is also increasing every year, from 14% in 2006 to 15.1% in 2011 and 17.7% in 2015

according to NHMS studies conducted at the time. The next study will be done in 2024
